BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Deena Boraie is the Dean and Professor of Practice of the School of Continuing Education at the American University in Cairo. She leads a school that offers a wide range of continuing education and training programs in the areas of English language, IT and business studies, Arabic language, translation and teacher training. She is a language testing expert and an assessment and evaluation consultant and trainer with extensive experience working with education projects and organizations in Egypt and the region. Dr. Boraie is currently the Senior Advisor to Egypt’s Minister of Education for assessment, examinations and curriculum.

She is Past President (she served as President from 2013-2014) of the TESOL International Association a large U.S.-based international association for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. She has published on topics ranging from assessment literacy, language testing and assessment, teacher beliefs and student and teacher motivation. She has presented extensively at international conferences on issues of English as a lingua franca, language classroom assessment, teacher professional development and teacher effectiveness. She is also a visiting professor in the MA / PhD Applied Linguistics program at the Faculty of Arts, English Department of Cairo University where she teaches research methods.

Specifically, themes 1, 2, 3, and 6.  So, this is the best fit for the conference in terms of my recent writings in the field.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Mmantsetsa Marope is the Director of the UNESCO International Bureau of Education (IBE) since July 2014. She holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Chicago, a Master’s degree in Education from Pennsylvania State University, and a BA and a CCE from the University of Botswana and Swaziland. Within UNESCO, she has held several director positions including the Director of the Division for Basic to Higher Education and Learning. Prior to UNESCO, her work experience includes the World Bank, university teaching, academic networks, and consultancy services to governments, bilateral and multilateral agencies. She is on advisory boards of diverse public and private sector institutions. Her publications cover a wide range of areas in education. She is also an award winning Setswana novelist. As the Director of the IBE her resolve is to propel the Bureau towards critical acclaim as the Global Center of Excellence in Curriculum and related matters.

Mr. Maurice Nkusi has been trained as Scientist in Physics and specialised in Systems Developments and Networks Administration at Masters’ Level from 1992 to 1994. He is a qualified Systems Developer, eLearning and mLearning Specialist, Instructional Technologist, Trainer and Senior Consultant. He went through extensive eLearning Systems Administration and development training at the Western Cape University in collaboration with InWent from Germany.

Maurice Nkusi gave no less than 1,050 lectures/presentations on various technology tools for effective teaching, learning, assessment and research for more than 23 years. He attaches great value to professional growth. He taught for many years IT related subjects in high school and tertiary levels. He loves developing technology solutions that address quality teaching and learning, foster collaboration among educators and he recently engages in developing MOOC solutions as service to support continuing professional development of teachers. The latest technology solutions he developed are Remedial Teaching eco-system (see http://tech-acat.com) and Kopano Online Education Forum (see http://kopano.unam.edu.na).

Maurice Nkusi is the Acting Director at Teaching and Learning Unit at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). His Department is offering a postgraduate certificate in higher education where academics are trained to respond to the demands of higher education, and where technology plays a central role. BIOGRAPHY

Prof. Callistus Ogol has since 2011 been Senior Education Expert at the Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology of the African Union Commission (AUC). From 2011 to 2014 he was the Focal Officer for the Pan African University, and is currently the Focal Officer for the Pan African Virtual and E-University, both flagship projects of the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Prof Ogol has 22 years teaching experience at the university, and before joining the AUC was an Associate Professor and the Director of the Institute for Research Science and Technology at Kenyatta University in Kenya. He Holds a PhD from the University of Alberta, Canada.
